Symphony of the Stones is a series of urban installations exploring the correlation between elevated levels of metals and magnetic residues in the soils of the Champ des Possibles (CDP), a contaminated site in Montreal. Inspired by geomagnetism, which uses magnetic fields to detect metal contaminants in soils, the installation repurposes this technique to activate metallic residues in the soils.
Symphony of the Stones features two aluminum sculptures echoing the metal structures left from the site’s industrial past.
The sculptures are placed over polluted areas, flush with the ground and covered with earth. Beneath each sculpture, magnetic fields activates the residues on top of their surface.
The project aims to creates new sensory relationships between humans and soil, encouraging bodily engagement. The project invites the public not merely to observe the soils, but to experience direct contact with them.
